How to figure out what you need and want in relationships using astrology?

Like a lot of people I have found what I want in a relationship and what I need, seem to be very different. I want excitement, freedom and unpredictably, but I need to feel safe and someone that will notice the details and care for me.

How would I find a magical person that can fulfill all of that? Is that too much to ask?

Well, yes it is...

Humans are complex, we are born with our own personalities, early childhood experiences that have molded us into who we are - and we change overtime too through through our life experiences, maturity and the feedback we receive.

But astrology can uncover our proclivities and hopefully by reading this you will have some 'aha' moments to help you understand why your wants, needs and desires can be out of sync.

Disclaimer: you need to consider the whole chart, progressions, transits etc. of the individual to really understand the person - you shouldn't judge a person by an aspect in isolation.

What you need - The Moon

The Moon in your chart rules your instincts, what you need to feel emotionally safe and nourished. It represents the maternal figure in your childhood. Your Moon sign, house placements and aspects will tell you how you were emotionally nourished in early life and your emotional responses.

The Moon in our chart represents who we feel like we are on the inside - so this is a huge factor on our relationships. If you really want to know someone and what they need - study their Moon sign.

Moon in Fire: Aries, Leo & Sagittarius
Tarot Archetypes: Page of Wands, Knight of Wands, Queen of Wands & King of Wands

You are emotionally excitable and passionate. You tend to be more extroverted in your emotional expression , and need adventure, passion projects, creativity, fun and attention to feel emotionally fulfilled. You can't stand being ignored, negative people, banality and routines - these things get you down and diminish your fire. Your negative emotional reactions tend to be impulsive anger, arrogance and blunt words.

Moon in Earth: Taurus, Virgo & Capricorn
Tarot Archetypes: Page of Pentacles, Knight of Pentacles, Queen of Pentacles & King of Pentacles

You are emotionally reserved and patient. You tend to be more internalized with your emotional expression, and need structure, routine and stability to feel emotionally fulfilled. You can't stand the impractical, irresponsible and the irrational - you need to feel like you're contributing to something in a tangible, helpful way and building structure in your life. Your negative emotional responses are usually stubbornness, worry and coldness.

Moon in Air: Gemini, Libra & Aquarius
Tarot Archetypes: Page of Sword, Knight of Swords, Queen of Swords & King of Swords

You are emotionally cool and cerebral. You tend to be more verbal and conceptual with your emotional expression. You need to be intellectually stimulated, be able to communicate with others and be social to feel emotionally fulfilled. You don't like highly emotional displays, stupidity and stubbornness. You need  to relate to others, be a part of a group of people discussing ideas and mental stimulation to feel emotionally fulfilled. Your negative emotional responses are intellectual superiority, defaming others and aloofness.

Moon in Water: Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces
Tarot Archetypes: Page of Cups, Knight of Cups, Queen of Cups and King of Cups

You are emotionally sensitive and feel a lot. Your emotional expression are very personalised, and changeable. You need emotional connection, compassion and empathy to feel emotionally fulfilled. You don't like emotionally inconsiderate actions and words, you are highly sensitive to other people's emotional needs and expect the same. Your negative emotional responses are moodiness, manipulation  and hypersensitivity.

Aspects to the Moon will give more insight to the emotional needs & expression

Conjunctions - the attributes of the planet will merge with the  Moon's expression
Opposition - the attributes of the planet will be polarising to the Moon's expression
Square - the attributes of the planet will be in conflict to the Moon's expression
Trine - the attributes of the planet will flow harmoniously with the Moon's expression
Sextile - the attributes of the planet will be complementary with the Moon's expression
Quincunx (inconjunct)- the attributes of the planet will be foreign to the Moon's expression

What are your tastes and what do you value in relationships? Your Venus sign

Venus is the sign that represents our love style, what we are attracted to and the type of connection we desire. It is what we find attractive aesthetically and emotionally. It's what we treasure and want.

The Venus expression will be filtered through the sign and aspect just like the Moon- but the needs of the Moon will always overpower Venus.

When the Moon and Venus are in conflict in aspect (Opposition/ Square/ Quincunx) this can play out as needs and tastes not being in sync. The maternal figure in life may not have embraced her feminine side which may have caused a unconscious separation between being a mother and being a woman.

Conclusion

The Moon's needs are always going to be in the forefront, but Venus's wants and desires are always going to play a pivotal role in your relationship desires too. You may be lucky and those wants and needs work together - but if they don't then you need to have a healthy outlet for both.
The key is to finding emotional nourishment and desire through pursuing your own happiness rather than depending on someone else to fulfill all your needs and desires.
